What it is

Dynamics 365 Business Central: Copilot and agents - Unlock more Business Central data with MCP server enhancements is a Microsoft 365 roadmap item published via Microsoft Release Communications. Current status: Launched.

What it does

With this update of the MCP server for Business Central, customers and developers can expose a broader set of Business Central APIs as tools, making it easier to build solutions that interact deeply and consistently with Business Central data and processes. Key improvements include: Access to all Microsoft APIs The MCP server can now surface the full set of standard Microsoft APIs in Business Central. This enables agents and integrations to work with a wider range of entities and actions out of the box, reducing the need for custom extensions and ensuring more consistent access to business data. Support for API queries In addition to standard APIs, API queries are now available through MCP configurations. This allows solutions to retrieve pre-aggregated and optimized datasets directly from Business Central, improving accuracy, consistency, and performance—especially for reporting and analytics scenarios. Business Value: This update to the MCP server in Business Central makes it easier to build powerful, reliable integrations and agents by expanding access to Business Central data and logic. By exposing all standard Microsoft APIs, customers can reduce the need for custom extensions and accelerate development of solutions that work consistently across their business data. Support for API queries further improves results by enabling access to pre-aggregated, optimized datasets, leading to better performance and more accurate insights in reporting and analytics scenarios. Together, these enhancements help organizations build more scalable solutions, improve data consistency, and unlock greater value from Business Central as a system of record and execution. Why you should care

Board

Agents change operating risk. Ask for registry coverage and owner accountability first.

CISO

Treat agents as privileged actors: least privilege, owner, lifecycle, and audit before scale.

CFO

Map licence or consumption impact to the frozen value case; avoid seat spray.

Adoption

Use for measurement of behaviour change; feed Pane 08 Adoption and Pane 06 Cost & Value.

Suggested action

Wave 0 first: Security → GRC → Cost & Value → Licence → Adoption. Put this on the agent register with a named owner. Do not enable broadly until permissions, DLP, and reclaim rules exist.

Communication needed

  • Security: Assess exposure, Conditional Access, and agent/tool permissions.
  • GRC: Update AI/agent register and evidence path; confirm DPIA triggers if personal data is in scope.
  • FinOps: Forecast seat or credit impact; align to frozen value case.
  • Adoption: Plan cohort messaging, clinics, and success measures.
  • Comms: One story for board and staff — what changes, what does not, who owns risk.

Benefits

  • May improve productivity on a specific Microsoft 365 surface when permissions and data quality allow.
  • Roadmap visibility helps Horizon planning without guessing dates.
  • Agents can automate multi-step work inside existing Microsoft 365 permissions.
  • Better measurement supports Use it or lose it and value reconciliation.

Risks

  • Status and dates change; treat MRC as directional, not a contract.
  • Enabling without Steady controls can amplify overshare or cost leakage.
  • Agents act; over-privilege and ownerless agents create lasting exposure.
