What it is

SharePoint: AI citations analytics for documents and pages is a Microsoft 365 roadmap item published via Microsoft Release Communications. Current status: In development.

What it does

AI citations analytics will help you track the usage of SP documents, news and pages through copilot and AI agents. You will be able to see how often a page or a file is referenced in a copilot response. You can also get insights into SharePoint site content getting referenced in copilot responses aggregated at the site level.

Why you should care

  • Board: Agents change operating risk. Ask for registry coverage and owner accountability first.
  • CISO: Treat agents as privileged actors: least privilege, owner, lifecycle, and audit before scale.
  • CFO: Metering change: set budgets, owners, and reclaim rules before open consumption.
  • Adoption: Use for measurement of behaviour change; feed Pane 08 Adoption and Pane 06 Cost & Value.

Suggested action

Wave 0 first: Security → GRC → Cost & Value → Licence → Adoption. Put this on the agent register with a named owner. Do not enable broadly until permissions, DLP, and reclaim rules exist.

  • Comms: One story for board and staff — what changes, what does not, who owns risk.
