Outlook Prioritize by Copilot — and citations you can check

Prioritise my inbox by Copilot is rolling out across Outlook clients. Pair it with Word’s citation-in-draft behaviour and you get a useful cluster: help me see what matters, then show me where the draft came from. Neither replaces judgement.

What shipped / what’s on the roadmap

Outlook: Prioritize my inbox by Copilot (MRC 411302) — status Rolling out. Microsoft Release Communications describes high-priority mail marked in the message list and reading pane, with a short summary of why it matters. Mail can be sorted and filtered by Copilot priority. On Web and new Outlook for Windows, low-priority marking is also available. Platforms listed: Android, Desktop, iOS, Mac, Web. Availability on the item: General Availability April 2025 (verify live on the roadmap; dates move).

Word citations in drafted content — 380841 (Mac, Rolling out) and 380848 (Web, Rolling out): when drafting from referenced sources, Copilot includes citations in the generated text. Learn release notes for late 2025 also document automatic citations when external information is incorporated into drafts (related Windows tracking often appears as 380842 in release notes).

Do not invent a later GA date than MRC shows. Recheck status before board packs.

Outlook Copilot continues to expand how chat and in-app assist reason over mailbox context — always within the user’s existing permissions. Board. Inbox triage is a productivity claim. Ask for a named cohort and a before/after measure — not a tenant-wide flip.

CISO. Priority summaries still surface content the user can already open. Overshare is unchanged; do not confuse ranking with access control.

CFO. Premium features sit on licence cost. Prove value on a cohort before expanding seats.

Adoption. Train: “priority is a suggestion; citations are a checklist.” Humans own send and publish.

Suggested action

1. Pilot Prioritize my inbox with a knowledge-worker cohort that already has Microsoft 365 Copilot.
2. Add a clinic habit: open citation links before sending externally.
3. Keep Focused Inbox / priority features out of policy language until Security and GRC agree what “priority” means operationally.
4. Log 411302 and the citation IDs on Horizon; review after two weeks of cohort feedback.

Communication needed

Adoption + Comms: one staff story — Copilot ranks and cites; you decide. Security: confirm no new data paths. FinOps: cohort licence check against the frozen value case.

Benefits and risks

Benefits. Faster triage when the “why” is honest. Drafts that show their working. Better literacy when citations are used as review aids.

Risks. Blind trust in priority. Skipping citation checks. Treating ranking as policy. Dates and status changing under your feet — re-read MRC.
