Frontier features and Frontier agents

The Microsoft Copilot Frontier programme: early AI features and agents, admin enrolment, and how 12 Panes fences exploration.

Frontier is Microsoft’s opt-in path to experimental and emerging Copilot and agent capabilities before general availability. Learn documents tenant-level admin control, Copilot licence prerequisites, and clear preview disclaimers. Exploration belongs on Pane 12 — not as silent production.

What it is

The Microsoft Copilot Frontier programme gives organisations early access to innovative AI capabilities in Microsoft 365 before GA. IT admins enrol users (no access by default, all users, or specific users) in Microsoft 365 admin centre under Copilot settings. Frontier sits beside Standard and Deferred release options in Microsoft’s audience-based release model.

Frontier agents appear in the Agent Store tagged “(Frontier)” under Built by Microsoft. Agent 365 preview features — such as agents with their own identity and Shadow AI — are also documented as available through Frontier for eligible tenants (for example with E7 / Agent 365 Frontier terms where Learn specifies). Preview terms in customer agreements apply. Microsoft may change or remove Frontier support.

What it does

Documented admin and user behaviours include:

  • Enrolment and scoping of Frontier features for web apps, desktop/mobile (often with Microsoft 365 Insider Beta Channel for apps), and agents
  • Allowing Microsoft-built apps and agents so Frontier agents can appear
  • Installing and pinning specific Frontier agents to groups for controlled trials
  • Approving AI provider models (for example Anthropic) when a Frontier experience requires them
  • Optional AI-enabled Cloud PC Frontier features via Intune when prerequisites are met

Learn notes that from 29 March 2026, newly published Frontier agents are available only to Frontier-enrolled users; earlier Frontier agents may remain available more broadly to Copilot-licensed users — verify current Learn text when you brief stakeholders.

Why you should care

Board. Early access is a learning investment, not a deployment claim.

CISO. Preview agents and model subprocessors expand risk. Keep default deny.

CFO. Do not fund production scale on Frontier timelines; there may be no Frontier SLA (Agent 365 Frontier FAQ on Learn is explicit that Frontier should not be used for product evaluations in place of trials).

Adoption. Small cohorts, clear feedback channels, explicit “this may change”.

How it maps to 12 Panes

  • Pane 03 Horizon: primary signal feed.
  • Pane 04–05: security and GRC gates for each enrol.
  • Pane 06: cost of attention and any metered usage.
  • Pane 12 Frontier: home pane — lab portfolio, time-boxes, kill criteria.

Wave 0 Steady work continues in parallel; Frontier must not bypass Security or GRC.

Suggested actions

  1. Leave Copilot Frontier on No access until a named Pathfinder owner and kill criteria exist.
  2. Enrol a security group, not the whole tenant.
  3. Pin at most one or two Frontier agents; require weekly review.
  4. Align Agent 365 Frontier features with identity and Purview owners before onboarding agent identities.
  5. Record each experiment on the Horizon watchlist and AI register.

Communication needed

Comms must say “preview / Frontier” in every staff message. Security, GRC, Adoption, and FinOps get the enrolment list. Board gets outcomes and stop decisions, not feature hype.

Benefits and risks

Benefits. Earlier readiness for GA. Feedback loop to Microsoft. Controlled learning for makers and security teams.

Risks. Preview breakage. Accidental production dependence. Model provider policy gaps. Confusion between Frontier and GA Agent 365.
